Doyin Okupe resigns as Peter Obi’s campaign DG

Doyin Okupe, the Labour Party Campaign Council’s Director-General, has resigned from his position.
He informed Peter Obi, the LP presidential candidate, of the news in a letter on Tuesday.
Okupe shared the letter on his official Twitter account and stated, “It’s time to retire. But until God grants us victory in the name of Jesus, I will stand with PO, the Obidients, and the Presidential Campaign.
Doyin Okupe resigned after being found guilty of violating the Money Laundering Act by an Abuja-based Federal High Court on Monday.
The leader of the Labour Party, who had formerly belonged to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was subsequently given a two and a half year prison term.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, the presiding court, offered Okupe an alternative of a N500,000 fine on each of the 26 count allegations, amounting to a total of N13 million for which he was found guilty.

Just 24 hours after being found guilty of charges related to money laundering, Okupe announced his resignation in a letter to Peter Obi. He explained that he made the choice because he had committed too much in your campaign to let his struggles serve as a diversion.

The letter read;

“Dear Peter, you will recall that I briefed you yesterday about my travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian Legal System to pursue same,” the letter read in part.

“I have invested too much in your campaign to allow my personal travails to become a source of distraction.

“In the circumstances, I have opted to step aside and plead that you appoint a new Campaign DG who can continue the assignment with zero distractions. God bless you and family.”

Okupe also tweeted;

“It’s time to step aside. But I am with PO and the Obidients and the Presidential Campaigns till God gives us victory in Jesus Name.”
